Albergue de Peregrinos de San Esteban
Albergue de Peregrinos de San Esteban in San Esteban de Leces
Overview
Albergue de Peregrinos de San Esteban is a municipal albergue offering dormitory accommodation exclusively for pilgrims on the Camino del Norte. Set in a beautifully restored 1888 schoolhouse, it is one of the oldest and most historic albergues on the entire Norte — open since 1999. It offers 60 beds at €15 per night, including breakfast, plus a fully equipped kitchen, bike storage, garden, and free Wi-Fi.
Conveniently located just 300 metres from the Camino route and 5 km east of Ribadesella, the albergue sits in the hamlet of San Esteban de Leces beside a Romanesque church and a medieval tower. Note that there are no shops or restaurants nearby — pilgrims should stock up in Ribadesella or order from the bar that delivers to the albergue.
Pilgrim Insight
Albergue de San Esteban is a genuine international meeting point on the Camino de Santiago. Hospitaleros Pablo and Yolanda create a welcoming, communal atmosphere in the old school building that pilgrims from across Europe describe as one of the highlights of the Norte. Furthermore, basic pharmacy and grocery supplies are available on site — a rare and practical touch.
Note: the albergue opens at 13:00 and closes at 22:00. Additionally, a bus runs to Ribadesella every two hours for pilgrims needing supplies or a restaurant meal in the evening.
