Walker Insight

Pensión Arbidel is a firm favourite among pilgrims on the Camino del Norte, and it’s easy to see why. The location in Ribadesella’s old town scores 9.4 out of 10 among solo travellers, the rooms are warm and characterful, and the attached Arbidel restaurant serves some of the best traditional Asturian food in town. After days of walking the Cantabrian coast, a sit-down dinner of hake in cider or fabas con almejas at the restaurant downstairs is a proper reward.

The guesthouse sits 100 metres from the River Sella, where canoeing and kayaking are available — including the famous International Descent of the Sella each August. The Tito Bustillo Cave is 1 km away, and the pension makes an excellent base for day trips to Gijón, Oviedo, Santander, and the Picos de Europa National Park, all within an hour’s drive.

Ribadesella’s gastronomy is famous, with typical recipes including calderetas, hake in cider, bonito, local seafood, smoked black pudding, and the celebrated local cheeses Gamonéu, Beyos, and Cabrales. The Arbidel restaurant puts the best of this right on your plate.
