Overview
Albergue Gándara in Santillana del Mar offers dormitory and private room accommodation for pilgrims on the Camino del Norte. Housed in a restored 16th-century palace — the Solar de Hidalgos — on Plaza Gándara, directly on the Camino route opposite the Regional Tourism Office, this characterful albergue features 10 dormitory beds, 10 private rooms, a bar-cafetería, garden, washing machine, dryer, and free Wi-Fi. The original stone floors, wooden beams, armour, sculptures, and paintings of the palace have been carefully preserved. Under new management since 2021. Open 20 March to 31 October. Check-in from 11:00 to 21:00.

Albergue Gándara is the most centrally located albergue on the Camino del Norte in Santillana del Mar. Spending a night in a 16th-century palace — surrounded by original stone, armour, and centuries of Cantabrian history — is one of the more extraordinary overnight experiences on the entire route. Additionally, the combination of affordable dormitory beds and private rooms at the same address makes it a flexible option for pilgrims at different budgets on the Way of St. James.
